Anonymous: The age of criminal responsibility in Texas is 15 years of age under Texas Penal Code Art. 8.07. If a “child” age fourteen or under commits certain first degree felony crimes, he/she can be tried as an adult in compliance with Texas Code of Criminal Procedure art. 54.02. For sex offenses, a “child” victim is anyone under age 17 under Texas Penal Code 22.011. A “minor” sexual assault victim is anyone under age 18 under Title 18, United States Code, Art. 2256. The U.S. Supreme Court in Roper v. Simmons,543 U.S. 551 (2005) defined a “juvenile” as anyone under age 18. You can Google these statutes and they will show up. Hope this information helps. Wanted to say that this has been intresting to hear both input on the matter. I am researching this case for school. But I’m a little confused.. My text book says The oldest age for original juvenile court jurisdiction in delinquency matters is age 16 for Texas. the source is from 2006, though. Is this a completly different meaning from a Juvenile is anyone under the age of 18? Any insight on this would be helpful. I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject. I do have to say this was a very horrible thing that happened to these girls and I very much feel for them. My heart goes out to them and their family. This is Big eye opener on what is going on in our world today.

Grits: I think my references to you in the above post are accurate given the number and manner of your posts about Judge Keller. As for being taken “seriously by serious people,” I will assume you count yourself as one of those “serious people.” Let me say this: points of view are based on informed factual analysis while opinions are based on gut instinct and raw emotion colored by personal experience. I am not seeking higher office in the court of public opinion, especially among “serious people.” I’m too old, fought too many battles (most of which I lost), and have too little time left on this precious earth to be concerned about what serious people” may or may not think of me. But, anyway, thanks for the trip to the verbal wood shed. Billy Sinclair

Southern Bread: You moniker says it all! But for the record, thanks for reminding why I exposed the “pardons-for-sale” scandal: your values and mindset. The rule-abiding, rehabilitated inmates could not receive executive clemency because the criminal thugs you endorse were lined up buying the corrupt pardons. As for your colorful personal condemnation of me, I wear your calling me a “snitch” and a “turd” as a badge of honor. Now, if you don’t mind, I am going get on down the road with my honest, responsible life. I would suggest you do the same, but with a moniker like “Southern Bread,” it would be a waste of time. Before YOU condemn a man……………U should know the entire facts of the story…This story is one-sided and of course thats The Ky Laws side. They do not even consider what These “Lawmen” did to him and his family before they drove him to this point. These so called lawmen did not know what they were doing…they were two weeks before just hired on as Policeman with absolutely no former training. From Factorys to Policemen in two weeks! Hmmmmm may be we should take that course if it only takes two weeks to be a cop. When this man was only fighting for his right to keep him and his family alive. What would YOU do if so called”cops” were shooting at you and your family? Would u consider fighting back? you know you would.

Why would you want to support a murderer, who, only by luck, avoided the death penalty when the Death Penalty was found to be unconstitutional, and whose sentence was commuted to LIFE in prison, but manipulated the prison system and law enforcement by ratting on his fellow inmates trying to buy their way out of prison, prisoners who for the most part had served two and three decades behind bars and who just wanted to die on the outside of prison walls? I thought that the laws in the United States forbid any person from profiting from their crime? Oh, I forgot, Sinclair is working for an attorney who is probably receiving the proceeds and then splitting the money with Sinclair. Isn’t that similar to what was going on with the Louisiana pardon board and Governor Edwards? Sinclair, you’re still a crook and a peice of turd.

Billy, you write “Grits n’ Casey are upset about is that the “public warning” administered to Keller by the13-member Commission was not severe enough.”

This is a misrepresentation. In fact, I specifically said “I’ve got to admit, I don’t care much who is right on the details of the obscure debate over the Commission’s power to ‘warn’ judges after a formal hearing.” And it was the executive director of the SCJC (and later Keller herself) who complained that the Commission’s decision was illegally lenient, so why you attribute that position to me I have no idea. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

Since you critique nothing else I’ve said except to assert false, baseless characterizations that say more about your own mindset than any position I’ve taken, I’ll eschew reacting to the rest. But I’d encourage you to take on real issues instead of straw men if you want your writing to be taken seriously by serious people.

And Rusty, if you write under your own name then I’m not talking about you when I criticize cowardly, anonymous trolls. But if you read Grits every day I’ve never seen your name in the comments, so perhaps you’re only willing to put your name on your opinions in forums like this one where the writers all agree with you.
